15 PSYCHOLOGICAL SELF-PROTECTION MECHANISMS

15 psychological self-protection mechanisms

Self-protection is a spontaneous behavior of an individual maintaining psychological balance, that is, through repression, compensation, rationalization, and sublimation (although these phrases are generated in psychoanalytic school, they are common in the whole process of psychological adjustment and counseling) to change the subjective feelings of psychological tension, to cover up the unacceptable internal impulse and virtual reality environment The danger of reducing pain and awareness of pain, and achieving a psychological balance of behavioral response.

The mechanism of psychological self-protection is generally found in human psychological activities, and its function is similar to the physiological immune system. When people are going to or have been in a state of tension and anxiety for some reason, they can use the psychological self-protection mechanism to alleviate or relieve the inner uneasiness and pain to better adapt to life.

1. Rationalization
When the motivation or behavior of a person is not accepted by society or frustrated by others, some ostensibly high-profile reasons are found to justify himself in order to alleviate the tension and anxiety caused by the conflict or failure of motivation. Of course, these reasons can not be pushed, not true or good. But it can play a psychological protection role at a certain time.

2. Imitation

4. Projection

But those who are accustomed to maintaining their psychological balance by projection often affect their real understanding of themselves and also affect communication with others. Therefore, the projection protection mechanism should be applied properly.

8. Fantasy
When encountering a problem that cannot be solved, put yourself in a state of imagination that is out of reality, and try to deal with the frustration in a nonrealistic way to obtain psychological balance. This protection mechanism is often used by the weak and the small.

9. Sublimation
In reality, the desire that can not be satisfied can be satisfied in a way that conforms to social moral standards.

10. Compensation
When the individual is frustrated in his or her goal or ideal or fails due to his or her physical defects and behavioral faults, he or she chooses other activities that can succeed to replace it to make up for the self-esteem and self-confidence lost due to failure.

11. No
The fact that causes mental pain is denied to reduce the mental pain.

12. Degradation
When people feel serious setbacks, the way to give up adults is not used, but to a situation where there are fewer difficulties, weak resistance, and safer. In childhood, children inadvertently restore their dependence on others, instead of actively seeking treatment of their own diseases, and fear of taking adult responsibility again.

13. Transfer
When the emotion of an object cannot be directly expressed to the object due to some reason (dangerous or not in accordance with social habits), it will be transferred to other safer or more acceptable objects.

14. Isolation
Part of the facts is isolated from the state of consciousness, not let themselves realize, so as to avoid causing spiritual unhappiness. The most often isolated part of the whole thing is the sense of fact.
